Welcome to the School of Theatre Arts!
There's a great deal of creation and performance going on around the clock in the College of Fine Arts. We welcome you to stop in and see some of our performances or exhibitions. To ease your visit, we have created the Calendar of Events, a page for the Fine Arts Box Office and a Directions page.
About the School of Theatre Arts
The School of Theatre Arts has been a free-standing theatre program since the mid-thirties, one of the oldest in the nation. Since its beginning the school's thrust has been a highly active production program. Today the school provides intensive production and academic training for students preparing for careers in the theatre.
The School's faculty guides and evaluates the work and progress of students through a blend of academic and practical experiences in which theory is applied through performance. Faculty members mentor, advise and evaluate students throughout their training and academic careers.
The School's production season is the curricular laboratory for its classically-based training programs, functioning as an integral extension of the training process. The Arizona Repertory Theatre (ART) is the centerpiece of the School's production program, with a season that typically consists of six fully mounted productions, including two musicals. Recent productions include Angels in America, The Cider House Rules, Dancing at Lughnasa, Noises Off, King Lear, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Hamlet, as well as the musicals Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, and Little Shop of Horrors.
The School of Theatre Arts also produces a Workshop Series, including staged readings, workshops, and fully produced productions in the Directing Studio, often directed and designed by School of Theatre Arts students. Recent productions include Tracers, SubUrbia, Reckless, Fool for Love, and Antigone. In addition, each year two productions focus on young audiences and tour to area schools: the Educational Theatre Company (etc... ), which produces such beloved plays as Step on a Crack; and Stories On Stage, a spring performance project that features original adaptations of children's literature.
The School of Theatre Arts is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association (U/RTA), which serves to integrate the academic and professional theatres across the nation, and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).
