Theatre Studies
The Theatre Studies division provides students with a thorough knowledge of theatrical scholarship through core courses in theatre history and dramaturgy that emphasize critical studies, historical awareness, and theatre's role in the community. Students are encouraged to use the tools of theatre research to bridge text with performance through practical and research-oriented projects.
The Theatre Studies division:
- offers students extended study and specialization in theatre history, theory and criticism, dramatic literature, and dramaturgy;
- provides course work which stresses critical thinking in verbal and written communication;
- maintains a strong commitment to undergraduate general education and to the liberal arts study of theatre;
- provides opportunities for students to serve as dramaturgs and assistant dramaturgs on all productions;
- emphasizes use of theatre as a lens through which to examine cultural trends and behavior; and,
- provides opportunities for graduate students to direct productions in workshop settings.
Theatre Studies faculty and students explore the vitality and uniqueness of theatre as a live, communal expression of diverse cultures.
