Opening Minds Through the Arts

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OMA ARTISTS
(for the 2007-2008 school year)

POSITION: Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) and the Opening Minds Through the Arts (OMA) Program are seeking teaching artists (music, dance, theater, and visual). Artists work on average seven and a half hours a week. Teaching Artists work in schools collaborating with teachers to create and present lessons that integrate the arts into the standard core curriculum (language arts, reading and mathematics) in grades K, 1, 2 & 3. Teaching Artists work 32 of the 36 weeks during the school year (starting after Labor Day and ending the beginning of May).

**Cost of Institute = $100.00
(Participants MUST attend the entire week of the Teaching Artist Summer Institute):

Sessions:

Session I Tuesday, May 29 — Saturday, June 2
7:30 am — 4:00 pm
First and last day at Stevie Eller Dance Theatre — U of A
Other days at Booth/Fickett Magnet School
   
Session II Monday, July 30 — Friday, August 3
7:30 am — 4:00 pm
Booth/Fickett Magnet School

The OMA program is structured on brain-based research that is being conducted to evaluate the effect on student achievement when delivering arts-based interdisciplinary lessons to teach the regular curriculum.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Have a specialty in fine arts, comfortable working with young children, ability to work as part of a team, available for classes during the school day (at least twice a week), able to secure own transportation.

WAGES: Temp/Hourly, varies from $19.00 to $25.00 an hour depending on training, credentials and experience. Must be present each day of the required institute to be eligible for salary of $19.00.

*TRAINING: This one-week institute prepares the teaching artists to be effective as team teachers and covers topics ranging from lesson plan development to classroom management and will be conducted by current artists, teachers, and administrators in the OMA program.
Research has shown that 85% of professional artists teach at some point in their careers and only 5% ever have any professional preparation.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Applications are taken at the end of the institute. Submission of an application does not guarantee a position in the OMA Program. Teaching Artists are interviewed on an “as needed basis” when an opening becomes available.
