Other Functions :

High speed search function that employs indexes (start Ids). Tape runs approximately 100X faster than the playback speed.
Absolute time, the time elapsed from the beginning of the tape is written in the subcode area of the tape and on display during playback
Time and Date is written on the tape automatically and can be checked during playback. This function is convenient for interviews.
Portable use with battery pack and shoulder strap.
Four DD (direct-drive) motors provided for the capstan, head drum, supply reel, and take up reel, enhance reliability and stability.
Usable for both analog and digital signal outputs and for analog inputs. You can select line or microphone inputs.
A variety of information is displayed :
twenty-segment digital peak level meter (L/R),
tape running/absolute time/remaining time,
Sampling frequency display (32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48kHz)
analog recording at 48kHz only
Battery life indicator
Moisture indicator
Caution indicator
Record time/date display
Function mode indicator
Recording inhibition indicator

To Use:

1. Power the DAT by inserting its battery (1.5 hours) into the battery slot on the rear panel until it clicks into place. It can also be connected to a battery pack (3.5 hours) for extended use.
2. Turn the unit on with the power switch located on the right side of the upper panel. Note the battery life indicator on the front panel display with blocks extending from E to F help you measure how much time you have left using the battery. You have 5 minutes once you reach a blinking single block, and an alarm will sound to warn you that the unit is about to shut off.
3. To record with the DAT you must have a DAT tape.
4. Press the "open" switch on the upper panel left side to open the outer cassette door, and then press the eject switch to open/lift the inner cassette door. Insert your tape and close the door.
5. Select mic attenuation 20 or 0, and choose to turn the mic low cut on or off with the switches on the right side. Close outer door.
6. Connect a pair of headphones to the 1/4" input located on the right side.
7. Connect the microphone to the XLR inputs and select analog input between mic or line in, or if you are using a digital I/O, connect a cable bringing in AES/EBU format, and select digital.
8. Test the signal by pressing REC and turning up the rec level located on the right side of the front panel. The inner and outer knobs control the analog right and left channels respectively, and they lock together for equal and simultaneaous right/left channel gain control, or can be controlled separately. Digital signal levels cannot be controlled.
9. Below that knob is the limiter switch, which can be toggled on or off. Use the limiter if you predict loud sounds to avoid distorting your tape with signals that are too hot.
10. When a sufficient record level is set begin recording by pressing play while holding down the record button. This procedure has a 2 second delay before recording actually begins. A more accurate way to trigger recording is to put the unit in pause mode, then press play while holding down record. As soon as you press pause again to unpause it, the unit begins recording.
11. The hold button protects the other buttons from being pressed.
12. Use the fast forward and rewind buttons on the front panel to navigate your tape upon playback.
13. The light button on the front panel is useful to light up the panel when recording in a dark environment.
14. The clock button on the front panel shows current time.
15. The recorded time button on the front panel shows how many minutes have been recorded on the tape
16. The counter mode button on the front panel is used to choose between tape running time, absolute time, or time remaining.
17. A special feature of a DAT recorder is the ability to index the tape with a sub code that allows for quick point locating during playback. Indexes are written if you press rec during the recording. The display blinks for about 10 seconds while the index is being written, and each time one is written its number increases by one. Later during playback the numbers will increase as you play through the tape like track id’s on a cd player.

NAGRA

3 portable reel to reel recorders with MARPL code names :
AUDNAGRA1
AUDNAGRA3,
AUDNAGRA4

Features :

AR indicator, principal function selector, pilot indicator, tape/direct switch, pinch wheels and tape guide control lever, tension roller, capstan, roller filter and strobe disc, erase head, lid, record, pilot, and playback heads, antenna socket for receiver, 5" supply and take up reels (7" reels can be used with lid open),

Accessory input, volume, meter, meter switch, removable handle line input, line input level control and playback, mike inputs 1 & 2, mike 1 & 2 input level controls mixer socket, loudspeaker volume, rewinds and fast forward switch, manual/automatic microphone selector, headphone jack, headphones.
low frequency roll-off attenuator and reference signal, resolver power - can be used with either batteries or an external power supply unit.

Pilot system :
To maintain synchronous sound with the film, the Nagra and camera are slaved . When the synchronization signal ,called the pilot tone, turns at exactly 24 frames per second its signal is exactly at 60Hz (USA) or 50Hz (Europe). Hz stands for Hertz, a measurement of cycles per second. For each 60 cycles there are 24 perforations of 16mm perforated film. The result is a sound track that is in-sync with the picture.

The pilot tone indicator is on the upper right of the front panel. If it is working correctly it shows a white cross. If the indicator shows black it is warning that the frequency of the pilot is incorrect or the signal is not reaching the pilot head.

To use :

1. Power the Nagra by either the external power supply that plugs into the power pack socket on the right panel, or with inserting batteries into the bottom compartment that opens by turning the two fasteners with coins.
2. Use the speed and equalization switch located on the upper panel to choose the speed, normally 7.5 ips.
3. Load the recorder by releasing the pinch wheel by pulling the lever on the right side of the tape deck forward. The full tape reel is placed on the left reel spindle and the empty one on the right. Close the pinch wheel.
4. Connect the microphone cable to the socket "input No 1" on the left panel.
5. Put the large pointer knob on the right side of the front panel into test mode. This turns on the amplifiers but not the motor. When you switch the meter switch located at the upper right of the VU meter to "battery reserve", the VU meter should go to the middle to show good batteries. It only reaches to the right of the scale when using the external power supply.
6. Next switch back to level to check the recording level. The sensitivity or recording level can be controlled manually or automatically. Manual control makes use of the "Mike 1" knob to select decibels of gain.
7. Putting the large pointer knob on the right side of the front panel into record mode will start the tape advancing and recording. When finished recording move the lever back to stop
8. To rewind the tape disengage it with the pinch wheel and put the lever on the inside bottom left to REW. Switch the large pointer knob to the bottom most position labeled playback. To stop rewinding put the REW switch back to the middle, re engage the tape with the pinch wheel and playback.
9. Headphones can be placed into the 1/4" jack in the bottem left corner of the front panel. The little knob to the right of it controls the headphone monitoring level.
