The Division of Design and Technology of the School of Theatre Arts offer study of sound design for the theatre at the undergraduate level.
For undergraduates, sound design is an area of emphasis within the BFA degree program.
Topics of study in the sound design courses include: acoustics, psyco-acoustics, the sound design process, digital audio editing, developing related paperwork, production budgeting and system design. Students have the opportunity to participate in and receive credit for production work each semester. Production assignments may include: sound design, assistant sound design, live mixer, assistant live mixer, playback operator, wireless microphone technician, system design, load-in.
Undergraduate sound design classes are:
- Sound for the Theatre (TAR 319) Basic principals of acoustics, sound systems and the sound design process. Fundamentals of recording and editing sound for the theatre.
- Advanced Sound Design (TAR 419) Advanced sound recoding and editing techniques aimed at problems unique to theatrical production.
