Foundations

The Foundations division is a dynamic, experiential sequence of classes designed as an initiation into professional artistic practice, creative methodology, and studio work ethic. With broad exposure being the guiding principle, the courses situate you in a stimulating think-tank environment. Here you will engage not only in the making of art, but also in a critical dialogue that explores how, and what, your art communicates—as well as strategies to hone this connection of the art object to its meaning.

Rather than focus on rules and formulas, you will center your skills to become inventive and resourceful in your approach. Your faculty will encourage your personal investment working with you closely from the generation of the idea through the realization of the object. The goal is to express your complicated ideas with a sophistication that resonates within you yet surpasses the cliché.

Your Foundations studio classes become tightly knit art communities. You’ll work alongside your classmates creating an environment full of creative possibility. Your critical thinking and communication skills will develop through engaging group critiques, individual critiques, and written self-evaluations. This community will provide a backdrop that challenges and inspires you.
