The School of Art offers academic advising through our Academic Advisors. Career and Mentoring advising is offered through our Faculty Mentors. If you have questions about your academic program, required courses, transfer units, the Mid-Career Writing Assessment, or any other questions related to the completion of course work necessary for your degree, you need to speak with an Academic Advisor. If you are looking for advice about possible internships, courses that might enhance your artistic development, how to have your work shown by a gallery or any other career related question, you need to speak with a Faculty Mentor.

Appointments
An appointment for Academic Advising is scheduled in advance through the Office Specialist (ART room 11c or 621-2618). Appointments are set in 1/2 hour time periods. These are set times you have with the academic advisor to go over your records. You should have a copy of your Student Academic Progress Report (SAPR) or your Grid Sheets and prepare your questions before you come in.
Typical questions during an advising appointment include:
What do I need to take next semester?
Can I take this course when I go home this summer and use it toward my degree?
I looked at my SAPR and it says I still need a non-western civilization course, but I took that!
Why does my photo class say only 2 units on the SAPR when it was 3?
Students should have at least one full appointment with the academic advisor each year. One per semester is recommended.
Walk-ins
During the year, academic advisors have walk-in appointments that you do not need to sign up for in advance. This is an opportunity to meet with your advisor and use 5 to 10 minutes. For the walk-in appointment, you just sign in, and the advisor sees you in the order you arrive. Every one on the list is seen. Once the sign up sheet is full, we no longer take names. The advantage is you can see the advisor on impulse; the disadvantage is you must wait to be seen.

A Career/Mentoring appointment with a faculty member is scheduled directly through faculty members during their office hours. Office hours usually appear on the class syllabus or are posted outside the professor's door. During this time, you can ask your faculty mentor questions about the development of your art or research. While you may speak with your mentor regarding courses that will enhance your personal development, how those courses fit in the curriculum is a question for your academic advisor.
Career development should be done beginning in your freshmen year. There are many aspects of career development that should be worked on before your graduation. We recommend at least one mentoring appointment with faculty per year.
